Judeo-Spanish in Bulgaria: a contact language between archaism and innovation

JuSpa (Judeo-Spanish) in Bulgaria is an ongoing research project conducted in partnership between the universities of Hamburg, Saarbrücken and Mainz.

The overall aim of the project is to better understand the status quo of Judeo-Spanish spoken in Bulgaria. We analyze two Judeo-Spanish varieties spoken in Sofia (western Bulgaria) and Plovdiv (eastern Bulgaria). For more information on the project’s aims, see the project description.

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (German: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), funding number: 491553503). Work began in April 2022 and will be funded for a period of three years.
