Priming in monologue and dialogue

Speaker: Martin Pickering

Institution: University of Edinburgh

Abstract:

People tend to repeat their own and each other's linguistic choices, both in monologue and dialogue. I discuss the extensive evidence for such priming and how it is informative about the nature of language production and comprehension. In addition, it supports the claim that dialogue is successful because interlocutors have a strong tendency to align their linguistic representations.
