EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE is JULY 15, 2007. Late registration is possible onsite at the workshop at a slightly higher fee (50 euro for students and 90 euro for non-students).
Description
Recent years have seen a growing interest in multi-modal processing in a variety of areas, among them online language processing, and an increasing number of studies have begun to examine the nature of the interaction between sentence comprehension mechanisms and non-linguistic (e.g., visuomotor) processes.
What is particularly striking is the way in which different research methods - among them behavioural, neuropsychological, and computational approaches - provide
converging evidence for the existence and incremental nature of this interaction. In addition, different research traditions such as language-for-action and embodied comprehension have provided complementary insights into how precisely visuomotor processing influences online sentence processing. Indeed, combining insights that are supported cross-methodologically with insights that have so far only been reported in a specific research tradition may prove a fruitful procedure for advancing our knowledge of the interplay between visuomotor and language processing.
The workshop focuses on online sentence processing and has two main goals. First, it aims to bring together converging and complementary evidence from three different methods (behavioural, neuropsychological, and computational). A further aim is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary discussion between scientists that have examined the interaction of language and visual/motor processing in embodied, situated, and language-for-action research traditions.
