Analyzing argumentative text: Potsdam Commentary Corpus 2.0

Manfred Stede
Universität Potsdam

The Potsdam Commentary Corpus (PCC) is a collection of argumentative text from several different (sub-)genres, which are annotated on different levels of description. Following a brief introduction to the text type and the corpus, the talk describes several new annotation layers that have been defined recently and are successively being added to the corpus. The software architecture, involving annotation tools, XML transformers, and the freely-available ANNIS2 Linguistic Database, is described. Finally, we turn to "argumentation proper": How is it to be represented as a level of text structure, what is its relationship to the more traditional "rhetorical structure", and how could its automatic derivation be conceived.
