Jürgen Trouvain – Research
My main interests in phonetics:
- Pause-internal phonetic particles and other non-verbal vocalisations
(e.g. laughter, breath sounds and clicks)
See particularly the PINTS project
(Collaborators: Khiet Truong, Bernd Möbius) - Stylistic variation
(e.g. sports commentaries)
(Collaborator: Friederike Kern) - Non-native speech
(e.g. phonetic learner corpora)
See particularly the IFCASL project
- Dialectal variation
(e.g. Luxembourgish)
(Collaborator: Peter Gilles) - History of speech communication research
One strand of my historical interest in our field centres around Wolfgang von Kempelen's book "Wolfgangs von Kempelen k.k. wirklichen Hofraths Mechanismus der menschlichen Sprache nebst der Beschreibung seiner sprechenden Maschine" from 1791. In this "Mechanism of Human Speech" the first functioning mechanical speech synthesiser is described. Together with Fabian Brackhane and Richard Sproat I've edited a commented and translated version of this classical work. The second historical strand is on the development of the phonetic sciences in the 20th century reflected by the Proceedings of the International Phonetic Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS).
