Transfer day activities (Sunday, June 10th)
- At noon we will get a packed lunch and the bus will pick us up to get to the castle ruin Grimburg, where we will take a guided tour.
Here is some information about the castle in advance: It was built at the end of the 12th century as a border defence to guard the possessions of the Trier church. Built on a mountain spur, Grimburg castle must have been an important stronghold during the 13th and 14th centuries. Its proportions, a 230 m by 100 m base surface, were considerable for those times.
In 1522, the castle was taken over by Franz von Sickingen, and later it was a place of witch trials, too. That\'s why today there is a witch museum in a rebuilt cottage near the castle, in which the visitors can gain an insight into the cruel procedures of the medieval witch hunt.
Due to the efforts of a local society for the advancement of cultural heritage, Grimburg has been rebuilt on its medieval foundation wall in the past decade. The old plans were used without, however, being completely authentic. In any case, what has been created is a lovely setting for castle feasts and recitals. This is, of course, to say nothing of the grand view over the Black Forest down into the Saarland region, which the keep, towering on high, offers the visitor.
- Following the castle tour, we offer an outdoor treasure hung using GPS (Geocaching). It will take about an hour and we are planning to have two competing groups. To keep the suspense alive, we won\'t tell you any more...
- If we finish the Geocaching hunt in time (which should be the case) we will round off our day of activities at the summer toboggan run in Nonnweiler.
