Implementing Metrical Phonology in Festival: Considerations and Outlook

Abstract:
Metrical Phonology has been around for several decades, but not found much application in fields such as speech synthesis. This talk attempts to outline some of the considerations involved in incorporating metrical theory into the Festival Speech Synthesis System, and highlight some of the issues encountered in such an approach. The focus lies on using speech synthesis as a tool in prosody research, and it will be argued that current unit-selection based synthesis techniques cannot easily fulfill the dynamic requirements of such a usage scenario.
