Advanced course

Course description
This course will cover the central issues in word sense disambiguation. We will start with the most important concern: what *is* a word sense? We will discuss homonymy and polysemy (unrelated vs. related senses), and issues such as word sense granularity and lexical semantic relations. We will then review previous approaches to distinguishing word senses, and how disambiguation relates to different applications. We will also conduct exercises intended to illustrate some of the difficulties with disambigation (both in grouping word tokens into senses and in identifying dictionary senses with tokens). The course will conclude with a discussion on the coverage of machine-readable dictionaries and possibilities for learning new senses automatically.
