Hans Uszkoreit ist Professor für Computerlinguistik und kooptierter Professor für Informatik an der Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken. Er ist zugleich Wissenschaftlicher Direktor am  Deutschen Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), wo er auch den Forschungsbereich Sprachtechnologie (LT Lab) leitet. 

Hans Uszkoreit studierte Linguistik, Informatik und Philosophie an der TU Berlin.  1977 ging er mit einem Fulbright-Stipendium nach Austin/Texas, und setzte sein Studium an der Universität von Texas fort.  Während dieser Zeit arbeitete er auch als Forschungsmitarbeiter an einem Projekt zur maschinellen Übersetzung. Nach seinem Studium bekam er 1981 die Gelegenheit, ein Jahr als Forschungsassistent am Center for Advanced Study in Stanford zu verbringen.  Danach war er als Computerwissenschaftler und später als Projektleiter am Stanford Research Center und am Center for the Study of Language and Information der Stanford Universität tätig.  Er wurde 1984 an der Universität von Texas mit einer Dissertation über die formale Behandlung der Wortstellung und Konstituentenstruktur des Deutschen promoviert.

1986 kam Uszkoreit nach Deutschland zurück, um als Projektleiter für den Bereich Wissenschaft der IBM Deutschland zu arbeiten. Während dieser Zeit versah er auch Lehraufträge an der Universität Stuttgart. 1988 erhielt er den Ruf nach Saarbrücken, wo er an der Universität des Saarlandes die Fachrichtung Allgemeine Linguistik begründete und das Fach Computerlinguistik aufbaute. Er ist stellvertretender Sprecher des Sonderforschungsbereichs 378 „Ressourcen-Adaptive Kognitive Systeme“ und Mitbegründer des Europäischen Graduiertenkollegs "Sprachtechnologie und Kognitive Systeme", ein gemeinsames Doktorandenprogramm mit der Universität Edinburgh.

Uszkoreit ist Präsident der European Association for Logic, Language and Information, Mitglied der European Academy of Sciences, Mitglied (auf Lebenszeit) des International Committee of Computational Linguists (ICCL), des Executive Board der European Network of Language and Speech, des Advisory Board der European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics and mehrerer Beratungs- und Herausgebergremien.  Er ist Mitgründer und Beiratsmitglied der Firma XtraMind Technologies GmbH , Saarbrücken, Mitgründer und Seniorberater der Firma acrolinx gmbh, Berlin sowie  Mitglied des Aufsichtsrats der GlobalWare AG, Eisenach. Als Verantwortlicher für das Deutsche Kompetenzzentrum für Sprachtechnologie ist er auch Hauptherausgeber des WWW Informationsdienstes LT-World.

Seine gegenwärtigen Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Anwendungen der Sprachtechnologie, formale linguistische Theorien zu Syntax, Semantik und Lexikon natürlicher Sprachen, deutsche Grammatik und Computermodelle sprachlicher Performanz.
