Inhalt
This course gives an overview of the scientific discipline of Phonetics, showing the link to Phonology. The three main areas of Speech Science: speech production, the acoustic structure of speech and speech perception are identified and the main questions of 'speech production' are explained and exemplified. The question of speech perception is addressed with a look at the contribution of consonants and vowels to the understanding of an utterance (written vs. spoken), and th dependency of perception on the prosodic structuring is demonstrated. The parallels between communicative importance, acoustic properties, auditory salience and production effort is demonstrated and explained. Finally, applicational aspects are addressed and a brief look at speech synthesis with an amusing example of inappropriate use finishes the lecture.
