Knowledge of the development and theoretical goals of phonological theories. Application of various phonological methods to the description of systematic sound patterning. Principles of phonological abstraction and description. Phonological processes and rules. Syllable structure and phonotactics. Tone and intonation. Laboratory Phonology. Exemplar Theory.
Reading to accompany the lecture topics, and written exercises
on the themes developed in the lectures.
Final written exam (graded).
