Content

Knowledge of the development, theoretical goals and the changing accents of the phonological theories of the 20th century. Application of various phonological methods to the description of systematic sound patterning. Principles of phonological abstraction and description. Phonological processes and rules. Syllable structure and phonotactics. Generative Phonology; Nonlinear, metrical, and autosegmental phonology; tone and intonation; Optimality Theory; Exemplar Theory; Laboratory Phonology.

Exercises and exam

Reading to accompany the lecture topics, and written exercises on the themes developed in the lectures.
Final written exam (graded).
