Visually Situated Understanding of Referential Expressions
Content of the course Eye tracking studies using the visual world paradigm have demonstrated that referential expressions are understood incrementally against the visual context. For example, when listeners are presented with arrays of starred or not, colorful shapes while listening to "The starred yellow square", they direct their looks to the relevant objects on the scene as soon as the first piece of information becomes available. Additionally, extensive research shows that listeners draw anticipatory looks to the objects expected to be heard next providing evidence for predictive processing mechanisms. In this seminar we will investigate whether and how visual context modulates listeners' expectations about the unfolding referring description with the use of ERPs. Students will be guided through all parts of experimental research, which include reviewing the relevant literature, designing and programming an ERP experiment, collecting and analyzing the data.
