In information-seeking and task-oriented dialogue, there is evidence that mixed-initiative systems lead to improved user satisfaction and performance. In the tutorial dialogue community, there is a growing consensus that students must construct knowledge for themselves to learn most effectively, and that computer-based tutors should engage students in "socratic" dialogues, which encourage students to do as much of the work as possible, while providing enough guidance to keep them from becoming too frustrated or confused. In this talk, we will investigate the relationship between socratic dialogue and initiative. We present a corpus analysis of human tutorial dialogues. We will then describe an architecture for dialogue systems, inspired by the three-level architectures used in robotics, that integrates deliberative planning with a dialogue move engine.

This talk will be followed by a demonstration session by Claus Zinn (starting around 17:00).
