Challenges in Moving Speech Recognition Applications into the Field

Klaus Failenschmid
Speechworks

Spoken Language Dialogue Systems have moved from the laboratory into the field. An increasing number of businesses offer automated services utilising Speech Recognition Technology. How are such systems developed? What challenges do system designers face and how do they overcome them? I will discuss business constraints, technical constraints, as well as 'user constraints' that influence the design of Spoken Language Dialogue Systems. Based on this a user-centred design approach that is based on a careful requirements analysis will be presented. This design approach has been used in many real development projects for businesses such as E-Plus, E*Trade, United Airlines, etc. This experience shows that with early usability testing and comprehensive tuning such a design process is a successful way to meet the challenges of moving Speech Recognition Applications into the field. Examples of real developments are used throughout the presentation.
