Comparative Introduction to Lexicalist Syntactic Theories
(Haupt-)seminar, Winter Semester 2005/06
Zweiter Studienabschnitt, B.Sc. and M.Sc. Programmes
Lecturer: PD Dr. Valia Kordoni (kordoni@coli.uni-sb.de)
Time and Place (Zeit und Ort): Monday (Mo) 16-18, Bau C 72, Konferenzraum 2.11
Begin: 24.10.2005
Office hours (Sprechstunde): Wednesday (Mittwoch) 16-17
Course description
Kaplan and Bresnan's LFG (Lexical Functional Grammar) and Pollard and Sag's HPSG (Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar) are widely perceived as closely related paradigms, but both have changed much since their inception, and there is significant evidence that they may now differ more than they agree. The course will discuss both paradigms from ontological presuppositions through formal mechanisms to linguistic analyses, and emphasise their similarities, their differences, and the consequences for pursuing various linguistic aims.
