Morphosyntax-Semantics Interface in Lexicalist Theories
15th ESSLLI, 25-29 August 2003, Vienna
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in
the interface between morphosyntax and semantics. One of the
main reasons for that is that generalizations over word
classes have been proven to help linguistic theories and
large-scale grammar implementations overcome the natural
limitations of syntax.
In lexicalist theories like Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG)
and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), as well as
in the large-scale grammar implementations based on them,
the interest in the interaction between morphosyntax and
semantics has led to the development of Lexical Mapping
Theory (LMT), the "Optimal Linking" theory of Butt, Dalrymple
and Frank (1997), the Hierarchical Lexicon models, and MRS
(Minimal Recursion Semantics).
The aim of this course is to present and explore approaches
on empirical and computational issues related to the
morphosyntax-semantics interface in LFG and HPSG. The course
intends to continue the series of courses and workshops on
the interactions between morphosyntax and semantics held at
previous summer schools. It is also dedicated to support
inter-framework discussions, since it focuses on computational
and empirical issues in both LFG and HPSG.
