Formal Semantics

My thesis On the Foundations of Temporal Discourse Representation Theory is work in progress. I shall finish it in 2012.

In 2009 my talk On the Formal Semantics of Begin and End of States in a Model Theory for Temporal DRT was published at CSLI Publications. I gave that talk at the 10th conference on Formal Grammar and the 9th Meeting on Mathematics of language in Edinburgh, Scotland (FG-MOL-2005) . Here are the proceedings of FG-MOL-2005.

In April 2001 the article Eventualities in Time: The localization of eventualities in the Platonist and the Reductionist picture of time appeared in the journal Grammars, Volume 4, Number 1, pages 69-83. In this article I show that there is a mathematical problem concerning the function used in From Discourse to Logic to localize eventualities in time. And I propose a remedy for this problem. The general picture that emerges should be interesting not only for DRT but for other theories using an eventuality-based semantics as well.
(Note that an earlier version of this article already appeared in Grammars, Volume 3, Number 1, 2000. The journal had managed, however, to introduce more than 100 typos (!) of their own into that earlier version in printing. Therefore the article was reprinted in April 2001, without those typos.)

In 1998 I gave a talk about Eventualities in Time at MFCS98. A summary appeared in M. Kudlek (editor), 23rd International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS '98). Workshop on Mathematical Linguistics, August 24-28, Pages 51-60, Brno, Czech Republic, 1998. In an extended form this has been published in 2001 in Grammars as Eventualities in Time: The localization of eventualities in the Platonist and the Reductionist picture of time, see above.

In 1998 a CLAUS-Report by me appeared (CLAUS Report Nr. 104). The title is Eventualities in Time. This paper addresses the general question of how eventualities should be localized in time. The more specific question about the localization of states and events is discussed, too. For these questions the theory of tense and aspect in Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) is closely investigated, as far as relevant for single-sentence-discourses. The answers given here are mainly inspired by DRT as presented in the book From Discourse to Logic by Kamp and Reyle. I show that the way eventualities are localized in time in that book contains some inconsistencies. In particular there is a mathematical problem concerning the localization function and a linguistic problem concerning the basic aspectual schema with culmination point. I propose a remedy for these problems. As main results I propose a change in the theory of aspect and a new definition of an eventuality structure. The general picture that emerges should be interesting not only for DRT but for other theories using an eventuality-based semantics as well.

Syntax/Semantics

In 2003 the book Anaphern, Quantoren und Parallelität by Jan Lerner and Petra Dünges was published by Gunter Narr, Tübinger Beiträge zur Linguistik 473, ISBN-13: 978-3-8233-6048-3 (the old ISBN is ISBN-10: 3-8233-6048-5). The main author is Jan Lerner, I am co-author.

This book can serve as an introduction into the interaction of elliptical and anaphorical phenomena and into the literature of that field. In addition it presents a new theory of Jan Lerner about anaphors, quantifiers and parallelism. The theories presented are checked against numerous examples.

In 2001 a CLAUS report with the title Anaphern und Quantoren im elliptischen Rekonstruktionsverfahren (CLAUS report Nr. 115). appeared. The main author is Jan Lerner, I am co-author. This CLAUS report is obsolete now, as it was published in a much improved version under the title Anaphern, Quantoren und Parallelität, see above.

Arabic Children's Literature

In 2011 my article Arabic Children’s Literature Today: Determining Factors and Tendencies appeared at PMLA, the journal of the Modern Language Association of America. (NOTE: Download is restricted to institutions with a subscription of PMLA. Many universities in the USA and abroad have got the permission to download; if you do not have this permission, contact me, and I will send you the article.)

(in: LITPROM Newsletter Nr. 1, November/ Dezember 2006)

You can find several Arabic-German children's books in my translation from Arabic in the publishing house Edition Orient.

I am bringing together various texts on Arabic children's literature at my special Web site.

From my former life: Physics

In 1989 I got a degree from the faculty of physics of the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, namely a Diplom, thus I am a Diplom-Physikerin. (A Diplom in Germany is roughly comparable to a Master of Science). My diploma thesis (Diplom-Arbeit) was written in the Institute of Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics at the chair of Prof. Martin Kretzschmar about a subject of mathematical physics, namely Der Dirac-Operator über semiriemannschen, raum- und zeitorientierbaren Spinmannigfaltigkeiten von beliebiger Dimension und beliebigem Index. I still like it. You can order a copy from the Bereichsbibliothek Physik Mathematik Chemie, PMC.
