Research Seminar:
Situated Human Language
Understanding
Time: 10:15-11:45am
Day: Tuesdays, Winter Semester 2009-10
Place: Building C7.1, Room U.15
Topic: This seminar is intended for presentation and discussion of (intermediate) research results by staff members, PhD students, and MSc dissertation students in psycholinguistics. The seminar will consider recent research concerning the role of the environment (e.g. linguistic and visual context, task, etc.) in theories of language acquisition and language processing. Of particular interest is how learners might exploit simple and complex visual contexts during lexical acquisition, and the role of fast-mapping and cross-situational learning mechanisms, as well as how visual contexts might inform the acquisition of syntax. Also of interest is the interaction of visual and linguistic processing mechanisms in adult comprehension, including the use of prior scene information no longer visible when an utterance is heard.
Schedule of speakers:
10 Nov 2009: Planning meeting.
24 Nov 2009: Afra Alishahi
01 Dec 2009: Matthew Crocker “Publishing in Psycholinguistics”
08 Dec 2009: Matthew Crocker “Career Development and Jobs in Psycholinguistics”
15 Dec 2009: Judith Köhne
05 Jan 2010: Olga Kukina & Regine Bader "Associative recognition memory: Influences of encoding strategy and conceptual system"
12 Jan 2010: Kalina Petrova "Attentional capture by biologically relevant stimuli"
19 Jan 2010: Emilia Ellsiepen (to be confirmed)
26 Jan 2010: Lisa Irmen
02 Feb 2010: Igor Farkas
