Saarbrücken - Edinburgh

The International Research Training Group (formerly International Post-Graduate College), established in 2001, is a collaborative PhD programme between Saarland University and the University of Edinburgh - two leading institutions in the fields of computational linguistics, cognitive science and artificial intelligence. The participating departments in Saarbruecken are the Department of Computational Linguistics and Phonetics and the Department of Computer Science.

The training group focuses on the computational and cognitive foundations of human language processing, particularly emphasizing the following research areas:

  • Cognitive and computational investigation of speech and language understanding
  • Knowledge representation, inference, the lexicon, and ontologies
  • Data-intensive and statistical language processing
  • Dialogue, language generation and human language processing

For more information about the group and current members, prospective applicants are encouraged to look at our website:

Candidates must have completed all requirements for their PhD degree by the time of appointment. The ideal candidate for the post-doctoral position will have research interests which span computational and cognitive aspects of language processing, and have experience overlapping several of the above areas. In addition to the opportunity to carry out independent and collaborative research, the position also includes some administrative duties associated with the program. Some teaching is also possible, but not a requirement of the post. The position comes with access to state-of-the-art computing facilities, and the possibility to use the range of lab facilities on-site - such as eye-tracking, dialog, speech, and robotics - by arrangement with the relevant lab directors. Salary is on the German E13 TV-L scale (approx. 33K Euros per annum, depending on age and marital status). Support for travel to conferences is also available. The position is available from 1 October, 2007 but a slightly later start date is possible.
