The course gives an introduction to Python, a powerful object-oriented language that is particularly suitable for processing natural language text. During the first half of the week, the main concepts of Python, such as syntax, data- and control structures, object oriented programming, and some of the rich functionality of the standard library will be presented. In the second half, the course will focus on the application of Python to computational linguistics and processing of text corpora, including XML processing, tokenisation, part-of-speech tagging, parsing, and information extraction.
