Mark Hopkins Department of Computer Science, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Title: What's in a translation rule? Abstract: In this talk, I will propose a theory that gives formal semantics to word-level alignments defined over parallel corpora. Moreover, I will discuss how this theory can be used to motivate a linear-time algorithm that derives from word-aligned, parallel corpora a minimal set of syntactically motivated transformation rules that explain translation data. This is joint work with Michel Galley (Columbia), Kevin Knight (USC/ISI), and Daniel Marcu (USC/ISI).
