Course Requirements

  • Duration of Talk: 30 minutes
  • Duration of Exercise: 15 minutes
  • Communicate with your assigned instructor; ideally send a draft of your slides and exercise one week before your presentation!

Grading

  • Presentation and class participation grade (100% / 60%) (4CP and 7CP options, respectively)
    • Your talk and exercise, as well as questions/discussion after the talk
    • Participation in discussion of other papers and exercises
    • One page research proposal for wrap-up session
  • Term paper grade (40%) -- ONLY if you register for 7CP!

Presentation/Exercise

  • Presentation of 1-2 papers (see list of topics/sessions).
  • Preparation of at least one exercise that is related to the topic of your paper.
  • To give a good presentation, you may need to read 1-2 additional papers (e.g., those referenced in the paper).
  • Main goal: to present the selected paper in an accessible way. Include any necessary background; assume the background of an entering CoLi MSc student.
  • Present the work, but also take a critical view on the paper: discuss shortcomings, possible future work, etc.
  • Slides and a description of the exercise must be submitted ideally one week before the presentation. With these slides, please send us your mobile phone number, so we can reach you in case we think some feedback might be useful before the presentation. If you want to schedule a meeting for discussing the slides, we are of course happy to do so!

Term Paper

Options:
  1. Survey: Comparison of 2-3 approaches with the necessary citations.
  2. Research: working out of your original ideas and/or approaches to the topic; some small amount of implementation may or may not be necessary, depending on the topic.
In either case, the term paper is to be written in the style of research paper, presenting your own ideas, analyses, comparisons, and so on. The paper must be written in English, and the final topic must be approved. The paper should be 12-15 pages long (a Latex template is provided here).
