Prerequisites and Responsibilites

Prerequisites

Students should be familiar with set theory, induction and recursive definition, basic formal language theory, propositional logic, predicate logic, and some form of formally explicit syntactic theory such as HPSG, LFG, or categorial grammar. Knowledge of a functional programming language is advantageous but not necessary.

Responsibilities

Not all material covered will necessarily be on slides or handouts, so attendance is important. If you must miss a class, you are responsible for finding out from classmates what you missed. Discussion is essential and you are encouraged to ask questions when you don't understand something or point out the error of my ways when you think I am mistaken (which happens more often than I wish it would).
Enrolled participants are expected to complete take-home problem sets providing in the concepts covered. Discussing the problems in study groups is fine, but you must write up the solutions on your own in your own words.
