Intelligent Language Interfaces
Course Contents In this seminar we will ask how multimodal language interfaces should be designed in order to meet the needs of different user groups. We will review studies of a variety of language interfaces designed for different purposes and for different user groups. In order to seek interdisciplinary support for product design, we combine evidence from (traditional) methods of user experience such as 'clicks', subjective ratings of usability, attitudes and emotions with evidence from cognitive psychology of eye-tracking and electroencephalography (EEG). We will evaluate whether language interfaces take into account the cognitive abilities and constraints of the users and whether they have characteristics of design that the targeted user groups find important in order to visit the interface again. As a special focus, we will evaluate how language is presented in the interfaces, how much information (relevant vs. irrelevant) is presented, how do pictorial and video information support/interfere with language, and ask what these aspects do for comprehension and user experience of these platforms. Note:The presentations will be assigned during the first meeting (26.10.2012). If you cannot join the first meeting, please email me asap. Please, check the topics from Readings in advance. |
