The main campus of Saarland University is situated in one of the many wooded areas surrounding Saarbrücken, the state capital of Saarland. Saarbrücken lies in the south-west of Germany, close to Luxembourg and the neighbouring French region of Lorraine.

Getting to Saarland University

The city of Saarbrücken is easily reached

  • by car
    • via the A1 motorway from the north (Trier)
    • via the A6 from the east (Kaiserslautern)
    • via the A620 from Luxembourg and
    • via the A4/E50 when approaching from either Metz/Paris or Strasbourg
  • by train and bus (Intercity - Saarbrücken Central Station ) and
  • by plane
  • Travelling to the university by car

    • Approaching from the east (Mannheim/Karlsruhe):
    • A6 Mannheim-Paris motorway as far as the exit "Ausfahrt St. Ingbert West". Follow road signs to the main entrance of the university ("Universität").

    • Approaching from the north (Koblenz/Trier):
    • Follow the A1 as far as the junction "Autobahnkreuz Saarbrücken", then take the A8 as far as the junction "Autobahnkreuz Neunkirchen / A8 / Saarbrücken(A623) / Karlsruhe"; at "Autobahndreieck Friedrichsthal" take the A623 in direction "Sulzbach-Altenwald / Saarbrücken / Frankreich". Leave the highway at junction "Sulzbach" and take a right turn following "L258 / Saarbrücker Starße" in direction "Hühnerfeld". In "Hühnerfeld" take the first exit at the roundabout following "Quierschieder Weg / L126". Stay on the major road in direction "Neuweiler/Saarbrücken/Universät until you reach the university.

    • Approaching from France:
    • Take the Paris - Mannheim motorway as far as the exit "Ausfahrt St. Ingbert West". Follow road signs to the main entrance of the university ("Universität").

    • Approaching from Luxembourg:
    • Take the A620 motorway as far as Saarbrücken, leaving at the "Wilhelm-Heinrich-Brücke" exit. From there, follow road signs to the main entrance of the university ("Universität").

    Travelling to the university by train and bus

    Train services
    From the north-west via Koblenz/Trier (RegionalExpress departing every two hours); from the north-east via Mainz (RegionalExpress departing every hour); from the east via Mannheim (fast IC/ICE services several times a day, or hourly suburban (S-Bahn) or RegionalExpress services); from France via Metz or via Strasbourg/Saargemuines.

    Bus services
    To get from Saarbrücken Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) to the university campus in Saarbrücken, you can take bus number 102 (to "Dudweiler-Dudoplatz") or numbers 112 or 124 (to "Universität"). These services are operated by the Saarbahn+Bus company and run every 30 minutes.

    For more detailed information, please refer to the online bus timetable. There are several bus stops on campus. You can get off at the first stop (Ersatzhaltestelle Campus) or at the second bus stop (Universität Mensa) (Attention: due to road works the announcements on the bus may be out-of-sync with the bus stops).

    Travelling to the university by plane

    Saarbrücken Airport has direct connections with the following cities:
