Generative and Discriminative Models for Query Rewriting
Stefan RiezlerSeminar für Computerlinguistik, Universität Heidelberg
Long queries often suffer from low recall in web search due to
conjunctive term matching. The chances of matching words in relevant
documents can be increased by rewriting query terms into new terms with
similar statistical properties. In this talk we present generative and
discriminative models for query rewriting that are trained on user query
logs. The challenges presented by these tasks are the development of
features that encode the salient aspects of query similarity, and the
adaptation of machine learning methods to the large and noisy data
provided by user query logs.
The presentation is on joint work with Yi Liu, Keith Hall, and
Massimiliano Ciaramita, and was done while working at Google.
