Statistical machine translation: Ongoing work at RWTH Aachen

Hermann Ney
Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen

When statistical machine translation (MT) was introduced 20 years ago, it was considered by many experts to be a singularity. Today it is the mainstream direction for research on MT.

RWTH has been working on statistical MT since 1995. Most of the recent RWTH activities are being carried out on real-life tasks in various joint projects like TC-STAR, GALE and QUAERO. We review the basic components of the RWTH system: training of alignment and lexicon models, extraction of bilingual phrases of word groups, log-linear modelling for hypothesis scoring and search, i.e. generation of the target sentence. In addition, we present ongoing work on various extensions like improved beam search, lexicon of word triples and system combination.
