Between two Chairs: Doing NLP Research in a Commercial Environment
Jochen LeidnerThomson Reuters Corporate Research and Development
In this talk, I characterise what it is like to do research in a commercial environment. Contrasting it with the life as a researcher in an academic institution, I will point out some key differences in approach, results and purpose, and discuss both advantages as well as disadvantages of being in an industrial research lab. I will also survey some of the research our R&D group at Thomson Reuters has been doing, and conclude with some speculations about where the field of natural language processing may be going, and where I believe it should be going.
