From sound to categories: Neurophysiological aspects of speech perception

Ingo Hertrich
Department of Neurology,
Universität Tübingen

In this talk, I will give a survey of the MEG studies on speech sound perception performed in Tuebingen. In particular, the time course of evoked magnetic fields will be considered, and an attempt will be made to assign characteristic electrophysiological events such as the M100 and the mismatch field to functional aspects of perceptual processing. Our most recent study addresses the issue of audiovisual integration of phonetic information. Based on this study, AV speech perception might be considered as a paradigm for a general mechanism of supramodal information flow toward the auditory system ending up in a fused auditory-phonetic percept.
