The activation of syntactic features of words during language production
Thomas PechmannLinguistics Institute
University of Leipzig
So far, the time course of lexical access in language production has exclusively been studied with respect to the activation of semantic and phonological properties of words. Most of the experimental evidence supports the so-called two stage theory of lexical access (Garrett, 1975; Levelt, 1989) which claims that lexical access consists of two distinct consecutive stages. At the first stage semantic-syntactic features of words are activated, at the second stage the phonological word forms. While this assumption has been confirmed in several experiments regarding the activation of semantic and phonological information, evidence concerning the activation of syntactic features has been lacking. I shall report a series of experiments which are aimed at filling in this gap.
