Negative Concord and Linear Constraints on Quantification

to appear: Yves d'Hulst, Johan Rooryck and Jan Schroten (eds.) Selected Papers from Going Romance '99 (Working Title), John Benjamins, Amsterdam.

In this paper we will address the phenomenon of negative concord (NC) in European Portuguese (EP). In our analysis, which is carried out in the framework of HPSG (Pollard and Sag 1994), we will propose that both distributional and semantic properties of concordant terms can be accounted for on the basis of independently motivated constraints of EP grammar, namely the linearisation properties of the set of left or right monotone decreasing quantifiers.
